The PIPER scalable Human Body Model

Human body Finite element models have the potential to provide significant insight into the paediatric response to impact. However, child models are by far less common and less advanced than their adult counterpart. Within the PIPER project, a new child model (PIPER Child model) that aims to be continuously scalable between at least 1.5 and 6 years of age was developed in the Ls-Dyna3D finite element code.

There is a wiki on the PIPER Gitlab with some advices and tutorials.

Overview: what is it?

The PIPER software framework was developed to help with the positioning and the personalization of Human Body Models (HBM) for injury prediction to be used in road safety. These HBM are typically available in one size and one posture (which can be difficult or time consuming to change), and they are implemented in commercial explicit Finite Element (FE) codes such as Ld-Dyna3D (LSTC), Pamcrash (ESI), Radioss (Altair) or Abaqus.

The preemie body shapes representing the 5th, 50th and 95th percentiles were updated to their version 1.0.1. A CAD-model was developed for each body shape, by Magnus Fridsell. The head and limbs of these models can be rotated into different sitting postures. A landmark for the head centre of gravity (CG) was added and can be used together with the CG for the whole body in the assessment of infant car seat design.
